Susan Sim

Head, China Liaison Office

Susan Sim is a fashion designer and inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, and a champion of public health communication and cross-disciplinary artistic practice. She oversees partnership collaboration, public advocacy and project delivery for the World Toilet Organization across China, using artistic innovation as a gateway to advance the localized dissemination and international exchange of WASH concepts in the country.

Her Profile

With a professional background in fashion design and a strong grounding in traditional intangible cultural heritage, Susan brings extensive expertise in public art curation and cross-cultural creative industry operations, and founded her own independent fashion label. Her broad artistic vision and cultural depth form the core foundation of her innovative approach to public health communication. With official endorsement from the World Toilet Organization in 2022, she led the China team to launch the International Toilet Art Week initiative. Leveraging diverse public art forms as the medium, the initiative translates public health issues into relatable cultural projects for the general public, breaking down barriers in public perception surrounding toilet and hygiene topics.

She engages with a broad spectrum of stakeholders — government authorities, non-profit organizations, industry partners, academic and research institutions, and the arts community — to oversee the rollout of key initiatives across China, including public toilet quality improvement, rural environmental sanitation development, hygiene education and awareness, and World Toilet Day campaigns. She facilitates mutual knowledge exchange between China and the global WASH sector, develops context-specific environmental sanitation solutions for China, and upholds the organization’s mission: “Safe and decent sanitation facilities are a fundamental human right.”
